WHY EISENHOWER HEALTH: Completing my internal medicine residency at Eisenhower gave me an opportunity to discover the in house Addiction Medicine Fellowship further. Firstly, I chose EMC AM for its comprehensiveness and diverse training along with the extensive clinical rotations including the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, Betty Ford Rehab, Desert Comprehensive Treatment Center and DAP. This ensures exposure to diverse patient populations and treatment settings. Â
Secondly, this program focuses on patient care by emphasizing practical clinical experiences, empowering fellows to effectively address all aspects of addiction medicine, from admission through post-discharge care and relapse prevention. Â Most importantly, fellows are encouraged to participate in journal clubs and research projects, with opportunities to present findings at departmental grand rounds and receive support for conference presentations. Â The program boasts dedicated faculties who are passionate about teaching and providing strong mentorship which further aids in the education of fellows. Lastly, the program aims to address the healthcare gap in the underserved Riverside County area which aligns with my own ideals of serving the disadvantaged population.

Class of 2024

Katie Gunnison, MD

Katie Gunnison, MD
Addiction Medicine Fellow
Addiction Medicine Fellowship
HOMETOWN: Irvington, NY United States
UNDERGRADUATE SCHOOL: University of Michigan
MEDICAL SCHOOL: The Chicago Medical School at Rosalind Franklin University
ABOUT ME: I am originally from the New York suburbs but have lived in CA for the past 12 years. I did my residency in Ob/Gyn at Kaiser Santa Clara. I practiced for 8 years before deciding to transition into Addiction Medicine. For the past two years I have been providing Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) at one of the largest non-profit organizations in San Francisco. I am very interested in perinatal substance use disorder (SUD) and the overlap of women’s health and addiction.
In my free time I enjoy being with my family which includes my husband, son (11) and stepson (10). We like to frequent dog parks and beaches with our two Mexican rescue dogs, Roxy and Mick. I also enjoy knitting, baking, travel, swimming and Michigan football. Go Blue!
ACADEMIC HIGHLIGHT: Walking across the stage at Med School graduation and being called Dr. Gunnison for the first time. It had never been my plan to become a medical doctor. I had started a doctoral program in Biochemistry and wasn’t sure that I could pull off the MCATs and the very involved application process when I left my doctoral program. Somehow it all worked out. I was accepted to med school and graduated in the quarter of my class. Receiving my diploma was a surreal moment.
WHY EISENHOWER HEALTH? There are many reasons! First, the Addiction Medicine Fellowship provides exposure to so many aspects of Addiction Medicine. This is important to me after practicing in the same context for the past two years. Second, the current fellows and the faculty. Everyone seems very happy with the program. The faculty are extremely devoted to fellow education. Lastly, the weather. I have lived on the East Coast and in the Midwest and dealt with some extreme cold and snow but the summers are amazing which makes it okay. There is something very wrong about chilly, foggy summers in San Francisco. I will not be missing them.

Claire Daniel, MD

Claire Daniel, MD
Addiction Medicine Fellow
Addiction Medicine Fellowship
HOMETOWN: Colorado Springs, CO United States
UNDERGRADUATE SCHOOL: Colorado College
MEDICAL SCHOOL: University of Illinois College of Medicine
ABOUT ME: I grew up in Colorado Springs, CO. After graduating from Colorado College, I completed a one-year master’s degree in health psychology at City University London. After working in Illinois for a few years, I went to medical school at the University of Illinois in Chicago. I moved to California to complete my internal medicine residency training at UCLA.
ACADEMIC HIGHLIGHT: My master’s dissertation research explored the experience of current and former substance misusers who participated in a British Military Fitness (BMF) style community-based group exercise intervention. The intervention was noteworthy for the intensity of the exercise and the fact that active drug use did not preclude participation. Before conducting interviews, I joined several workouts and experienced firsthand the group’s camaraderie. During interviews, I learned of individuals’ ostracization — from society at large but also from the medical community. Many participants had stopped seeking medical care entirely on account of stigmatization by providers. The experience demonstrated the potential of community services to build social inclusion amongst people in different stages of recovery, including stages of lapse and relapse.
WHY EISENHOWER HEALTH? The program ensures a variety of clinical sites and settings. Elective rotations expand on this diversity and allow fellows to personally tailor their training.
