ABOUT ME: I was born and raised San Francisco, and my family is now based in Orange County. I have a strong interest in community psychiatry and began my psychiatry journey working in inpatient psychiatric settings throughout the Inland Empire. I am passionate about caring for diverse and underserved populations and value a patient-centered approach to mental health. Outside of medicine, I enjoy staying active, playing video games, and spending time with family and friends.

ACADEMIC HIGHLIGHT: One of my favorite academic experiences has been attending and presenting research at the American Psychiatric Association (APA) Annual Meeting. These conferences allowed me to explore meaningful topics within psychiatry, engage with current research, and contribute to discussions with clinicians and peers. Presenting at a national conference strengthened my interest in psychiatry and reinforced my commitment to lifelong learning and evidence-based care.

WHY EISENHOWER HEALTH: I was drawn to Eisenhower Health’s commitment to patient-centered care and its strong connection to the Coachella Valley community. I appreciate the opportunity to live and work in a region with a diverse population and wide range of mental health needs. I look forward to continuing my training in such a supportive environment while serving this vibrant community.

Kelvin Martinez Garcia, MD

ABOUT ME: I enjoy the quiet moments I get to spend with my family and pets. In medicine, I’ve always been driven by an evidence-based and patient-centered approach. In my free time, I love playing video games, watching movies, running, and playing soccer.

ACADEMIC HIGHLIGHT: As the Coordinator for Prevention and Infection Control of intrahospital infections, I gained a better perspective on hospital management, quality assurance, and the systems that support safe and effective patient care. I have also had the pleasure of mentoring medical students, which allowed me to support the growth of a new generation of physicians.

WHY EISENHOWER HEALTH: What captivated me most about Eisenhower Health was the interview process. After my interview, I not only felt reaffirmed in my decision to pursue Psychiatry, but I also felt genuinely welcomed. The leadership and faculty showed sincere interest in my personal and professional journey, something I found truly invaluable. Combined with the institution’s excellent facilities, long-standing commitment to training medical professionals, and the unique opportunity to be part of the first generation shaping the Psychiatry program, Eisenhower Health quickly became my top choice.

Todd Richardson, MD

ABOUT ME: Dr. Richardson lives in the area with his husband and their dogs. He enjoys hiking, reading, and watching films, pursuits that keep him grounded and curious both inside and outside the clinic.

ACADEMIC HIGHLIGHT: Dr. Richardson brings a distinctive perspective to psychiatry, shaped by a nontraditional career path. After completing his MBA, Dr. Richardson spent years working in healthcare administration — an experience that gave him a firsthand understanding of healthcare systems, patient access, and the organizational factors that shape the care people receive. Driven by a desire to serve patients more directly, he made the decision to pursue medicine and went on to earn his medical degree from Loma Linda University School of Medicine.

WHY EISENHOWER HEALTH: Dr. Richardson is now thrilled to join Eisenhower Health’s inaugural psychiatry residency class in Rancho Mirage, California. He is particularly drawn to the program’s deep commitment to the diverse communities of the Coachella Valley — including its large geriatric population, significant Hispanic and immigrant communities, LGBTQ+ patients, and local Native communities. Having spent his professional career thinking about how healthcare organizations can better serve people, Dr. Richardson is eager to now do that work on the front lines, building meaningful relationships with patients across the full spectrum of psychiatric care.

Jonathan Shaw, MD

HOMETOWN: Irvine, CA

UNDERGRADUATE SCHOOL: Chapman University

MEDICAL SCHOOL: California University of Science and Medicine

ABOUT ME: I was born and raised in Orange County, California. I attended Chapman University for undergraduate and received a B.S. is Health Sciences. I then attended the MD program at California University of Science and Medicine in the Inland Empire where I grew to love community and interventional psychiatry. Outside of medicine, I enjoy exercising, reading manga, listening to a variety of music, playing video games, and spending time with my family.

ACADEMIC HIGHLIGHT: I have published and presented extensively on a variety of topics such as burnout, medical education, back pain, psychopharmacology, neuroethics, psychedelics, neuromodulation, and alternative treatments for psychiatric disorders.

WHY EISENHOWER HEALTH: During medical school, I rotated with Eisenhower Health and was impressed by professionalism, good work-life balance, and ample resources that the residents and faculty had. I was also happy to hear that Eisenhower Health already has a TMS service and will be expanding to include further interventional psychiatry treatments.
